Car Shampoo review

A simple quick review on various car shampoos I've tried and tested.

First up is Kit Car Shampoo.

The bottle instructions say
1 cap + 6 L water.
1 cap = 8.5 ml

therefore you only need
17 ml per 12 L water.

17 ml!!!!

thats a dilution ratio of 1:700
amazing!

the bottle only costs Rm 10

Then I mixed it with the water.
Then I found the reason why its so cheap,
it doesnt work.

I tried washing the bike and it felt like I was just using plain water, something you should never do.
Seriously the water feels rough and dry. A good shampoo has to be wet and slippery.
Bubbles? There were some bubbles but they are not really important.
the verdict

Dilution Ratio 1:700
Price: Rm 10 /16 oz

bubbles: 6/10
smell: 4/10 (smells like Glo)
lubricity: 1/10
price: 7/10
overall: 4.5/10

Next

Duragloss 901

This one was purchased for Rm 40
Much more expensive but that is expected for such a small packaging.
The bottle instructions says
add 1 oz to 1 gallon of water
or
60 ml: 7.68 L

The shampoo in the bottle was nice and thick like AnW golden syrup.
I mixed it with the water and OMG

1. it instantly made the water all red like blood. haha
2. it was slippery and very gentle to the fingers.
3. it simply let the washing mitt glide over the surface of my car.
4. it was a bit difficult to rinse off as it was really slippery.
5. but it worked really well and blows Meguiars shampoo out of the water (so to speak)

Dilution Ratio 1:128
Price: Rm 40 / 16 oz

bubbles: 8/10
smell: 9/10 (smells like cherries)
lubricity: 8/10
price: 5/10
overall: 7.5/10

Meguiars NXT generation shampoo

This one has been my fav for a long time. It cleans, it bubbles, it smells awesome and its reasonably priced.
But there was just something about that lacked the qualities of the Duragloss.

The shampoo in the bottle had the consistency of Honey and was really thick. When I added the water it bubbled up nicely. But the bubbles will die down a little bit.

It was also really gentle on my wash mitt and carried away the dirt nicely.

I would say this one needs a gallon bottle to make it worth the money. But for now it only comes in half gallon.

Dilution Ratio 1:128
Price: Rm 60 / 64 oz

bubbles: 6/10
smell: 10/10 (smells like high tech stuff)
lubricity: 8/10
price: 4/10
overall: 7.0/10

So overall winner for this round is the Duragloss 901.
Superb lubricity and cleaning power.

The Kit shampoo could be good only if were more slippery and can actually clean. But at Rm 10, I didnt expect it to do much. I might save that Rm 10 for good nasi kandar and teh o ais.

Jun's tips on car washing.

Each step will have an explanation.
Steps in uppercase letters is a must.

*OPTIONAL
1. Pressure washer - used to blast off dried up gunk and mud stuck on the car. This is so you dont contaminate your sponge. Pressure washers save a lot of water.
(my washer uses 360 Litres/ hour. That means 3.6 Litres in 6 minutes.
I only use the washer for 6 minutes anyway.)

2. If you got no pressure washer, use a hose and try your best to remove the stuck on gunk with your palms. Human palms can feel dirt alot better than a sponge would. And please, dont rub and scrub, just lightly run over the dirt.

3. ALWAYS USE 2 BUCKETS. 1 BUCKET FOR SOAP WATER, 1 BUCKET FOR PLAIN WATER. RINSE OFF THE SPONGE AFTER EACH CAR PANEL IN THE PLAIN WATER TO REMOVE DIRT. THEN GO BACK TO THE SOAP WATER.

4. ALWAYS BE LIBERAL WITH THE SOAP. lubricity is the key. plain water is like sandpaper to a car.

5. DO NOT WASH IN CIRCLES. You dont want circle scratches or swirls to form.

6. when you pick up more soap, do not slosh your sponge on the bottom of the bucket. only take the top part. (any dirt has dropped to the bottom)

7. Dont use the last 1/5 of your soap bucket. (any dirt has dropped to the bottom) I know you waste a bit of water here, but you can use this for something else. washing your tyres for example.

8. NEVER EVER RUB ANY STAINS OR STUCK ON DIRT WITH THE SPONGE. YOU WANNA DIE AH!? SMACK YOU THEN YOU KNOW.

9. ALWAYS RINSE the SOAP OFF WITH PLAIN WATER to get soap off.

10. ALWAYS DRY YOUR CAR AFTER THAT TO PREVENT WATER SPOTS.

Back when I was 6 to 7 years old, I will point out to my mom "look! Civic!"
Annoying my mother at the same time as I attempted to name every single car model out there. Toyota Corolla! Proton Aeroback Knight!
Volvo 244
Honda Prelude.

But this particular cutie, is simply stunning.

And the colour? Red of course.

Review: Meguiars Car shampoo line

After more than a year of detailing experience with these products, I will do a little review.
You see I use Meguiar's to detail my car, I dont like cheap, and I expect the best for my car.

First up is the consumer line

Gold class shampoo and conditioner.

This product comes in 3 bottles

473 ml @ Rm 44
1892 ml @ Rm 60
3780 ml @ Rm 120

You may purchase them at Parkson Grand, Eneos Car Centers and ACE Hardware.

If you're someone who washes your car yourself then this is the bottle for you.
To mix, for every 10 ml of shampoo, you'll need exactly 1.28 L of water.

Heres a quick table

10 ml + 1.28 L
30 ml + 3.84 L
50 ml + 6.4 L
100 ml + 12.8 L

The results are gorgeous as this shampoo is meant for a quick wash if you dont have the time to wax when you're done. After washing, you'll find that most of the water on the car is gone so you save time drying the car.
My rating

8/10

This shampoo is from the meguiars professional line up. You'll see why.

It comes in just 1 bottle and can be purchased at just 1 place, Hypercoat Subang Jaya USJ 1

3780 ml @ Rm 160

To use it, mix 10 ml of shampoo with exactly 4 L of water. Yes, you read it correctly.
10 ml + 4 L!!!!!
Heres a table

10 ml + 4 L
30 ml + 12 L
50 ml + 20 L
100 ml + 40 L

Just for reference a mini cooper requires only about 20 L of water to wash.

You can see here that this shampoo is highly economical.

Assuming you wash the car everyweek,
and you use 50 ml each time
you get to use this bottle for he next 1.45 years!!!

Unlike the Gold Class, this one doesnt have conditioners. So it does basically just one thing, wash.
Be sure to top up your work with an LSP (Last step product) like Meguiars Tech Wax.
However I find that it doesnt dry as quickly as the gold class.

My rate 9/10

I got myself a few New Year 2009 presents. Is there such a thing?
Meh, I dont care.
But yay, this means I get to expand my business just a little bit.

This is the Hitachi Rotary Polisher. In the wrong hands, it will punish you like a black stallion on a rampage. But with practice and utter respect for it, its a.....great companion that no detailer should ever leave home without.
Respect, respect and respect the rotary polisher.

This is the Karcher K2.01 Pressure washer.
Capable of blasting pressurised water jets, the gun is able to remove all that grub, mud and dried, caked on brake dust with ease. Takes about 5 minutes to set up with a garden hose, uses regular 13Amp 3 prong household electricity switch, 1 on/off button and a trigger on the gun to make cleaning the car a joy.
